Congratulations to New Avenue’s newest Architect – Steve Schwope. Steve has successfully completed all the requirements of the Architect Registration Exam, passing every exam section on his first attempt, to become a fully certified Architect in the state of Ohio. He will continue to work with our commercial clients as he begins to further take on the role as Project Architect. The dedication and drive he has shown to successfully complete the exam will continue to serve New Avenue’s clients well. Steve is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that await him as he steps into the leadership role as an Architect and New Avenue is eager to have him continue to grow into an integral part of the firm’s commitment to their clients’ success.
Well done, Steve!
We’re in a changing environment with the current economy, stagnation took hold in the building construction world over the past few years right when “Green” was becoming an every-day word and heard in every published article. ICF (Insulated Concrete Forms) construction has been secretly around since before “Green” became a trend and well before “Green” fell to the wayside when all companies began tightening their bootstraps, yet ICF was destined to be the poster child for “Green” construction, especially in the hotel industry.
Here we are in 2013, robust construction taking hold again in the hospitality industry, yet “Green” is really called “Fiscally Responsible” now, and guess what? ICF construction is that poster child for construction too!
- More cost-effective
- Better fire resistance
- Easier to construct (even in inclement weather)
- More dependable
- Higher energy efficiency
- Less reliant on heavy equipment
- More mildew and mold resistant
- Higher indoor air quality
- More temperate environment
- Better sound quality
Gulp. All this? For nearly identical overall costs? Add in the future operating cost reductions and you have a recipe that your accountant will love!
Several hotel chains currently have ICF construction in their fleet:
- Candlewood Suites
- Comfort Inn
- Drury Inn
- Hampton Inn
- Holiday Inn / Express
We at New Avenue Architects and Engineers have worked directly with the ICF industry since 1994, even before ICF was accepted as standard construction in the model international building codes. Yet we worked closely with suppliers, contractors, and interested building officials to ensure ICF building designs exceeded codes and other “old school” construction methods which today cannot meet current energy code requirements; whereas, ICF still exceeds these without any modifications. We at New Avenue have both engineers and architects who live and breathe energy efficiencies with electric cars, high efficient A/C systems (SEER 14+), Nest thermostats in the office and at home, all while serving on our local Green Building Initiative, Habitat for Humanity and Food Bank Construction Committees. We want to make a difference in the lodging industry as well.
To learn more about ICF Construction or if you have any general questions regarding Architectural or engineering needs please don’t hesitate to call one of the principals at New Avenue Architects and Engineers in Columbus, Ohio such as Robert W. Miller, PE, CPBD at 614-884-8888.

New Avenue Architects and Engineers have been providing consulting services for 17 one and two-story internal team buildings inside the 850,000 square foot state of the art plant near Youngstown Ohio. Not only has this been a great group of projects on a high-paced fast tracked schedule, V&M has opened their arms to ICF construction by implementing New Avenue’s plans utilizing this type of construction to make their buildings cleaner, more energy-efficient, and with more rapid turn-key development. Several additional buildings are being considered with this ICF construction in this plant and possibly the next facility on their schedule. Vallourec’s plant is a new state of the art seamless pipe mill in Youngstown, Ohio to meet the growing demand for small diameter pipe resulting from the boom in horizontal drilling of the Ohio Utica-Point Pleasant Shale. The new plant will be capable of producing up to 500,000 metric tons of seamless pipe from 2 3/8” to 7” with the premium product offering and quality standards, some pipe is already being produced.
